The short version

What is 3D modeling?

Building a thing as geometry, at real dimensions, so a computer can photograph it from any angle you like.

A model has no materials and no light. That is why an untextured one looks like grey clay, and why the clay view is the cheapest moment in any project to change your mind about something structural.

Every image on this site started as one. The render is a photograph of the model, which is why the second view of a building costs a fraction of the first: the expensive part was building the thing, not photographing it.

It also means the model outlives the campaign it was made for. A scene built in 2019 has produced new frames for the same client four years later, at the price of a render rather than the price of a project.

Words people use interchangeably

A model, a render and a BIM file are three different things.

They get quoted against each other constantly, usually by suppliers who benefit from the confusion. The distinction decides what you should be asking for.

The 3D model

Geometry. Surfaces at real dimensions with no materials and no light. It is what a render is made from, what a configurator spins, what an AR app places in a room and what a 3D printer slices. Reusable indefinitely.

The render

A photograph of the model, at one hour, from one camera, in one set of materials. Change the hour and you have a second render off the same model. The image is the deliverable; the model is the asset behind it.

The BIM model

Geometry plus data: what each element is, what it is made of, what it costs, when it gets installed. Built for coordination and construction rather than for pictures. A different discipline with different software and different people.

CAD and BIM files

What we do with your Revit file, and what we do not.

This is the part of the market with the most vague language in it, so here is ours in plain terms. Two of these we do every week. Two we do not do at all, and you should not buy them from a visualization studio.

We model from your BIM export

Send Revit, ArchiCAD, IFC or AutoCAD and we work from that geometry rather than redrawing the building. It is faster, it is more accurate, and it means the model agrees with the drawing set your team is already working to.

We rebuild what the camera needs

A BIM model is built for coordination, not for a lens. It carries every bracket and no usable materials. We keep the geometry that reads, replace what does not, and add the context and detail a render needs and a BIM file never has.

We do not author BIM

No clash detection, no Revit family creation, no LOD 400 coordination model, no scan to BIM, and we do not hand an IFC back. That is a BIM consultancy's job and they are better at it than we would be.

We will say when it is not us

If what you actually need is a coordination model or a quantity take-off, you will hear that in the reply rather than after the invoice. It costs us the occasional project and saves both sides a bad one.

Furniture and product modeling

One object, modelled once, used everywhere.

A manufacturer's model is a longer-lived asset than any image made from it. Built properly, it carries a catalogue, a configurator, a marketplace listing and an AR viewer without being rebuilt for each.

Camera and clay

The building goes up as untextured geometry and the camera is placed in it. Standing point, lens, height and the hour of the day are settled on a grey model, which is the cheapest moment in the project to change any of them.

Materials, real light and the context around it. Deliberately early, while the light and the finishes can still change cheaply. Two revision rounds are included and in practice we keep going until it is right.

None of these are visible in a preview image. All of them surface the week someone on your side opens the file.

Wrong scale

A model delivered at a thousand times size, or in the wrong unit, breaks physical lighting and every asset you try to place beside it. Cheap to get right at the start and tedious to unpick later.

Millions of triangles where thousands would do, overlapping faces, flipped normals. It renders eventually, it will not go into a configurator, and nobody can edit it without starting again.

Objects whose centre sits somewhere off in space. Invisible in a render and immediately painful in any scene where someone has to move, array or animate the thing.

No naming, no structure

Four thousand objects called Box001. The model works exactly once, for the one image it was made for, and is worthless as the asset you thought you were buying.

What it costs

What 3D modeling costs.

Per project, never per hour and never per polygon. An hourly rate rewards the slow supplier and a per-object rate punishes you for ordering a set. Here is what actually moves the number, so you can scope your own before asking.

  • How much geometry there is

    A single chair and a nine-storey block with a modelled interior are different orders of work before anyone discusses detail.

  • How complex it is

    Flat facades and rectangular furniture are quick. Curved joinery, ornament, woven textures and mechanical assemblies are not.

  • How complete your files are

    Dimensioned CAD is the cheapest input. A photograph and an approximate size is the most expensive, because the work becomes reconstruction.

  • How much of it repeats

    Twenty variants of one product, or forty apartments from six unit types, cost a fraction of twenty or forty unrelated things.

  • What it has to survive

    A model for one render is not a model for a configurator, a factory or an AR viewer. Say which up front and it is built once.

  • Delivery format

    Native working files are free. Clean exports to a named format with textures repacked for a specific engine take real time.

  • Changes after sign-off

    Two rounds are included. A redesign after the clay view is approved is new work, and we will say so before doing it rather than after.

Not line items to negotiate up from. This is what the number means.

  • Real-world scale and clean topology, with sane pivots and readable object names.
  • Clay view before materials, so the structural argument is settled at the cheap moment.
  • Two revision rounds, then refinement until you sign off. We do not stop at a count.

Outsourcing

Handing over the modelling without handing over the design.

Most studios that outsource modelling are protecting two things: the design itself, and the time it takes to explain it. Both are solvable and neither is solved by a cheaper hourly rate.

You keep the files

Working files and the finished geometry are yours on delivery, in your format. No licence to renew, no asset held hostage against the next project, and nothing that stops you taking it to someone else.

NDA before the drawings arrive

Signed as standard rather than on request. Unconsented schemes and unannounced products are the normal case here, and nothing is published without written permission.

You brief the modeller

No account-manager layer relaying your drawings to someone you never speak to. Fewer hand-offs is the entire reason the first version comes back close to right rather than approximately right.

3D modeling FAQs.

What is 3D modeling?
3D modeling is building an object or a building as geometry inside 3D software: a mathematical description of every surface, at real dimensions, that a computer can then light, texture and photograph from any angle. It is the step before rendering rather than a kind of rendering. A model on its own has no materials and no light, which is why an untextured model looks like grey clay, and why the clay view is the cheapest moment in a project to change your mind about anything structural.
What is the difference between a 3D model and a render?
The model is the geometry. The render is a photograph of it. One model produces any number of renders from any number of angles, at any hour of the day, in any weather, which is why the second image of a building always costs markedly less than the first: the expensive part was building the thing, not photographing it. If you order a render you are paying for a model whether or not anyone calls it that.
Do you do BIM modeling?
No, and it is worth being precise about what that means. We model FROM your BIM files: send a Revit, ArchiCAD or IFC export and we work from its geometry rather than redrawing it. What we do not do is author BIM. No clash detection, no Revit family creation, no LOD 400 coordination models, no scan to BIM, and we do not hand back an IFC. If you need those, you need a BIM consultancy and we will say so rather than take the project.
What files do you need to start?
Whatever you already have. CAD (.dwg), PDF plans and elevations, SketchUp, Revit, ArchiCAD, 3ds Max, a photograph of a hand sketch, or for a product a technical drawing with dimensions and a few reference photographs. You do not need a tidy file set to get a price. If something essential is missing we tell you what it is in the quote rather than discovering it halfway through.
What do I get back?
The geometry in the format you ask for: .max, .fbx, .obj, .3ds, .blend or .skp, plus the textures and the material setup where the job includes them. Models are built at real-world scale with sane pivots and clean topology, because a model delivered at 1000x scale with the origin in a random corner is a model somebody on your side has to fix before they can use it.
Can I order a model without a render?
Yes, and a reasonable number of clients do. Manufacturers who need geometry for a configurator, studios who render in house but do not want to build, and product companies who need one clean asset that will be reused for years. Priced the same way, per project rather than per object.
How accurate is the geometry?
As accurate as what you send. From dimensioned drawings it is exact. From a photograph and a rough size it is a careful reconstruction and we will tell you which parts we inferred. For anything that will be manufactured or fabricated from the model, send the drawing rather than the photograph: the difference between those two inputs is the difference between a model you can build from and a model that only looks right.
Do you model in Blender or 3ds Max?
3ds Max is the working file for most projects, with Corona for the rendering side, and Blender where a project or a client pipeline suits it better. We can deliver into either. The software matters far less than people expect; studios differ much more in how carefully they build and how they handle a spec than in which application they have open.
Can you model from a competitor's product photograph?
We will model an object you own or have the right to reproduce. We will not reverse-engineer someone else's protected design from a photograph so it can be manufactured, and we will ask what the model is for if the request looks like that. It is a short conversation and it has never yet cost us a project worth having.
How is 3D modeling priced?
Per project, never per hour and never per polygon. The drivers are how much geometry there is, how complex it is, how complete your input files are, how much of it repeats and what format the delivery has to be in. A set of twenty similar objects costs far less per object than the first one. Send the files and you get one fixed number and a delivery date within 30 minutes.
