Upgraded projects can also be exported as PDF or DXF. You can trace over an image or PDF of an existing plan.

Best for estate agents and renovators
RoomSketcher makes the tidy 2D and 3D plans common on property portals. You draw in the app for Windows, Mac, iPad or an Android tablet; the web portal is for viewing and ordering. The free plan starts with 2 credits and watermarked snapshots. Pro is $24 a month with 5 credits; 3D photos cost a credit each. Plans can be traced from JPG, PNG or PDF; DWG files need converting to PDF first.

Cedreo is made for builders who need plans to scale and photoreal renders for clients. The free plan has 1 project and no renders. Personal costs €79 for a single project with 20 renders, and Pro is €49 a month billed yearly. Its plan import lists JPEG, PNG, PDF, DWG and DXF, but the pricing page does not make clear which plans include import. It exports JPG, DXF and PDF to scale.

Best for a free program you own
Sweet Home 3D is a free desktop program for Windows, Mac and Linux, with an online version in the browser. You draw walls over an imported image, and it makes photoreal images and videos on the desktop version, not online or on mobile. The app store versions are paid, but the vendor's site does not state their price. The interface is older than the rest of this list.

magicplan is a phone and tablet app for contractors: scan rooms with LiDAR or measure them, then export PDF reports, estimates, DXF, IFC and OBJ. Best for modelling a building from scratch
SketchUp is a general 3D modeller, not a floor plan tool, so you draw everything by hand. SketchUp Free runs in the browser and is for non-commercial use only. Go costs $10.75 a month billed yearly for the iPad and web. Photoreal rendering is only on the Studio plan. The free version exports SKP, PNG and STL.

Best for a full 3D house with roofs and framing
Home Designer, from Chief Architect, is a desktop program for Windows and Mac that models whole houses, including roofs, framing and kitchens. From the 2026 version it is one subscription: $79 a month or $495 a year, with a trial and no free plan. It is the only tool here whose help pages document both DWG and DXF import and export.
