How it works

How to convert a 3D model

3 steps, and the file never leaves your computer.

1. Add your model

Drop the file on the converter or click to choose it. Models made of several files, such as OBJ with MTL and textures or glTF with BIN, are opened together or from one .zip.

2. Check it in 3D

Rotate and zoom the preview to check that the model arrived whole. The panel shows the triangle count, the size and whether the mesh is watertight.

3. Choose a format and download

Pick one of 8 output formats and click Convert and download. Files are written in your browser and saved to your downloads folder.

Choosing a format

Which 3D format to convert to

Pick the format by what happens to the model next.

For 3D printing: STL

Every slicer reads STL. It stores only the shape, with no colour and no units, so check the size in the slicer before you print.

To move a model between programs: OBJ

Almost every 3D program opens OBJ with its materials and textures. It does not store animation, cameras or units.

For the web and AR: GLB

GLB is the binary form of glTF. It packs the model, materials and textures into one small file for three.js, model viewers and AR on phones.

For CAD programs: STEP

SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor and FreeCAD all open STEP. A STEP made from a mesh has flat faces instead of true curves, so it can be measured but not easily edited.

What converts cleanly, what does not, and why.

Does the converter work on a phone or tablet?

Yes, in any current browser on iPhone, iPad or Android. Your device does the work, so very large models, such as a whole building in IFC, open faster on a laptop or desktop with more memory.

What is lost when I convert a 3D model?

Only what the target format cannot store. STL drops colour and materials, OBJ drops animation and units, and every mesh format turns CAD curves into small flat triangles. The shape itself is kept exactly.

Can I convert a mesh back into a CAD model with real curves?

Not automatically. The converter can save any mesh as STEP, and CAD programs open it as a solid with flat faces. Turning those facets back into true curves and editable features means rebuilding the model, which is 3D modeling work.

Which formats does it not support?

Closed formats that only their own program can read: Revit (.rvt), SketchUp (.skp), Blender (.blend), 3ds Max (.max), Cinema 4D (.c4d), ArchiCAD (.pln) and SolidWorks (.sldprt). Export IFC, OBJ, FBX, STEP or STL from those programs first, and the converter tells you which menu to use when you drop such a file.

Can it convert DWG or DXF drawings?

Not yet. DWG and DXF are mostly 2D drawings, and this converter reads 3D models. For a 3D solid, export STEP or STL from your CAD program and convert that.
