How it works

How to convert a file to OBJ

3 steps, and the file never leaves your computer.

1. Add every file of the model

An OBJ model is usually several files: the .obj with the shape, the .mtl with the materials and the texture images. Select them all at once, or drop the folder as a .zip file. Any other format is a single file.

2. Check the preview

The model opens in a 3D preview with its colours and textures. If it shows up grey, the .mtl file or the textures were not included. Add them and open the model again.

3. Pick a format and download

Choose OBJ, STL, GLB, glTF, STEP, PLY, 3DM or OFF and click Convert and download. When the result is more than one file, such as OBJ with its MTL, you get a single ZIP.

What is in an OBJ

The files that make up an OBJ model

Most problems with OBJ files come from one of these files missing.

The .obj file

A plain text list of points, texture coordinates and faces. Every 3D program can read it, which is why OBJ is the safest format for moving a model between programs that do not share a native format.

The .mtl file

The materials: colour, shine and the names of the texture images. The .obj names its .mtl on a line that starts with mtllib. The converter rewrites that line, so the pair keeps working after you rename it.

The texture images

JPG or PNG files named in the .mtl. They are saved beside the model and packed into the same ZIP, so nothing goes missing when you send the model to someone else.

What OBJ does not store

Animation, rigging, cameras, lights and units. If a model needs to move, keep it in FBX or glTF. If the scale matters, write the unit down, because the OBJ file will not.

Why does my OBJ model show up grey?

The .mtl file or the texture images were not opened with the .obj. The .obj only names its materials; the colours live in the .mtl and the textures in separate images. Select all of them together, or put them in one folder, zip it and drop the .zip file.

Do I need the MTL file?

Only if you want the colours and textures. Without the .mtl, the shape converts perfectly and the model is saved with one plain material. For 3D printing, the .obj file alone is enough.

How do I convert OBJ to STL?

Drop the .obj file, choose STL in the menu and click Convert and download. STL keeps only the shape, so the materials are left out. The STL converter page also checks whether the mesh is watertight, which matters for printing.

How do I convert FBX to OBJ?

Drop the .fbx file and keep OBJ selected. The shape, materials and textures carry over. Animation, bones and cameras do not, because OBJ cannot store them. If the textures are separate files next to the FBX, select them together with it.

Can I open an OBJ from a ZIP file?

Yes. Drop the .zip and the converter finds the .obj, the .mtl and the textures inside it. This is the easiest way to open a model downloaded from a model library.

Is OBJ or FBX better?

OBJ is simpler and is read by more programs, so it is the safer choice for a static model. FBX also carries animation, rigs, cameras and lights, so use FBX or glTF when the model has to move.
