How it works

How to convert GLB to OBJ

3 steps, and the file never leaves your computer.

1. Drop the GLB file

Drop the .glb file, or the .gltf together with its .bin and texture images.

2. Check the model

It opens in 3D with its materials and textures, its size, triangle count and parts.

3. Download the OBJ

The OBJ comes in a ZIP with its MTL material file and the texture images. Unzip it and open the OBJ in your program.

What OBJ keeps from a GLB, and what it does not

OBJ is older and simpler than glTF.

Colours and textures come across

Base colours and colour textures are written to the MTL file. PBR extras, such as roughness and metal maps, have no standard place in OBJ and may need setting up again.

Animation and rigging do not

OBJ stores a static mesh. Animations, bones and morph targets are dropped, and the model comes out in its rest pose.

Keep the files together

An OBJ needs its MTL and texture files next to it. Unzip the download into one folder before you open it.

Parts stay separate

Each mesh in the GLB stays a separate object in the OBJ, so you can still select and edit them one by one.

How do I convert GLB to OBJ with textures?
Drop the GLB on the converter on this page and download the OBJ. It comes as a ZIP with the MTL file and the texture images. Keep them in one folder when you open the OBJ.
Does it keep the animation?
No. OBJ has no animation or bones, so the model is saved in its rest pose. Keep the GLB if you need the animation.
Why does the OBJ look different in my program?
OBJ materials are simpler than glTF PBR materials. The colours and colour textures are kept, but reflections and roughness may need setting up again in your renderer.
Can I convert OBJ back to GLB?
Yes. The 3D converter writes GLB from OBJ, FBX, STL, STEP and other formats.
Is my file uploaded?
No. It is converted in this browser tab on your own computer and never sent to us or anyone else.
